# What is the short history of salt therapy?

## Answer

This is not a trend invented last Tuesday.

Miners in places like Poland’s Wieliczka salt mine were observed — already in the nineteenth century — to have fewer respiratory complaints than people living above ground. Physicians built spa practice around mine air. After World War II, doctors who had watched people shelter in salt mines helped formalize **speleotherapy**: time spent in a natural underground salt microclimate. Underground health resorts followed.

Above ground came later: machines that grind dry salt and put a fine aerosol into a room so you do not need a mine. That is the modern salt cave and salt room — a portable descendant of mine air and, in spirit, of seashore air.

The throughline worth keeping: noticed by working miners, studied by physicians, adapted with generators so Main Street can sit in it. Old observation, new room. Still not a clinic. Still not a cure. History is a reason for respect, not for overclaiming.
