# How does salt air actually work?

## Answer

The short physics: dry sodium chloride is **hygroscopic** — it draws moisture toward itself. When very small particles land on the mucus lining of the airways, the industry explanation is that they help thin that mucus so the body’s own cilia can sweep it more easily. That idea is not invented in a spa brochure. Hypertonic saline (salt water) is used in mainstream respiratory care for some conditions for a related osmotic reason.

A halogenerator is trying to get *dry* particles small enough — often discussed as 1–5 microns — to travel past the nose and throat. That is the difference between “I sat in a pretty pink room” and “there was actually salt in the air I breathed.”
