# Socks or barefoot on the salt?

## Answer

Houses vary, and this magazine will not invent a single rule.

Many salt rooms **require socks** — salt is abrasive, it gets everywhere, and a shared floor is easier to keep kind if feet are covered. Some provide disposable booties over your socks. Some spa-style private caves invite **clean bare feet** because the salt underfoot is part of the experience.

If you want to go barefoot, ask whether they want feet washed first. If you have cuts on your feet, that is a reason to keep socks on and, if the skin is open, to ask your physician and the host before you book.

Bring clean socks either way. Do not wear the pair you hiked in. The host’s house, the host’s floor.
